How to Save Money on Gas

Learning how to save money on gas is one of the easiest ways to reduce your monthly spending, and doing so will often help keep your car healthy. Fortunately, there are a few common-sense strategies that can help you save money at the pump — and help you avoid having to stop at a gas station so frequently.

How to Save Money on Gas for Your Car

  • Combine Your Errands: Driving less is the obvious way to save gas, and you can make that happen by combining errands into a single trip. Instead of taking multiple short trips, you’ll save money by taking one longer trip.
  • Slow Down: Driving fast might give you a buzz, but it’s bad for your bank account. Going fast increases drag, which increased fuel consumption, so keep just below the speed limit and avoid accelerating quickly if you want the most from each drop of gas.
  • Fuel Up Away from the Highway: Drop into the first gas station you reach after a long stretch of highway and you’ll usually find topping up the tank a pricey proposition. Try driving a little further towards the nearest town to find a cheaper station, especially if you need to fill from empty.
  • Brake Smarter: Excessive braking wastes gas, and it’s also a prime reason why your brake pads might be wearing out too fast. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead so you don’t need to brake as often, and try to break steadily when you’re coming to a stop instead of jamming your foot down at the last minute.
  • Commit to Scheduled Maintenance: A poorly maintained vehicle won’t operate at peak efficiency. You should monitor your tires and regularly have the engine tuned, filters changed, and the right motor oil changed at a professional service center.
  • Invest in a New Vehicle: If you’re trying to save, investing in a new vehicle might seem like the wrong move, but you could save money in the long run since newer vehicles tend to be more efficient. You could even think about a hybrid or an EV.
